World Hepatitis Day 2025

On 2 September, Hepatitis Australia proudly hosted a World Hepatitis Day event at Parliament House. It was great to see so many people in the room, including members who made the trip to Canberra to be part of the day.

The event provided an opportunity to acknowledge the work still ahead, as well as the significant progress already achieved. Both the Chief Medical Officer and Hepatitis Australia CEO Lucy Clynes highlighted that elimination by 2030 remains within reach. With the pending release of the new national hepatitis strategies, Australia has an important opportunity to renew our efforts and strengthen our collective response.

We were pleased to be joined on the day by the Hon Emma McBride MP, Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, and Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Prof Michael Kidd AO. Hepatitis has always enjoyed bipartisan support, and we were also pleased to welcome Shadow Health Minister Senator the Hon Anne Ruston.

The event was hosted by Tim Wilson MP and Renee Coffey MP – co-chairs of Parliamentary Friends for Ending HIV, Hepatitis, STIs and Other Blood Borne Viruses. Hepatitis Australia would also like to thank Liam Grant from Hepatitis NSW, as well as AIVL, Scarlet Alliance, and Hepatitis B Voices Australia for sharing their experiences and insights. Finally, a special thank you to Hepatitis Australia's President, Prof Joe Doyle, for expertly chairing the event.

This event was made possible with the generous support of our sponsors Gilead and AbbVie.
