The Juice is a national harm-reduction initiative created in partnership by Hepatitis Australia and the Australian Injecting & Illicit Drug Users League (AIVL). It provides accurate, practical and non-judgemental information for people who inject performance and image-enhancing drugs (PIEDs), including anabolic steroids.

Injecting PIEDs carries higher risks for blood-borne viruses like hepatitis B and hepatitis C. National Needle and Syringe Program data show a steady rise in PIED use, with these substances now the third most commonly injected in Australia.

The Juice was first launched in 2021 and has been shaped closely with people who have lived or living experience of PIED use. Between 2024 and 2025, Hepatitis Australia and AIVL worked with AIVL’s peer networks, Your Community Health’s Steroid Education Program, the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS), Blue Mountains Nepean LHD NSP nursing team, and Health Equity Matters to ensure the content remains accurate, relevant and community-led.

Re-launched in 2025, The Juice continues to share clear harm-reduction guidance, safer-use tips and links to testing and support. A recent social media campaign reached more than 70,000 people with the message: “If you’re gonna do it, do it right.”

By working alongside AIVL and its networks, The Juice helps reach communities often overlooked in national hepatitis elimination efforts, supporting more people to access the information they need to stay safe and healthy.
