Turning National Strategies into action

The Fourth National Hepatitis B Strategy 2025–2030 and the Sixth National Hepatitis C Strategy 2025–2030 set an agenda for eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health concern in Australia.

Hepatitis Australia has been tasked by the Australian Government to develop an Implementation Action Plan for each Strategy. The plans will help translate the goals and priorities of the National Strategies into practical action, identifying what needs to happen, when it should happen and where efforts should be focused over the life of each Strategy.

What are the National Strategies?

The National Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Strategies provide a shared framework for Australia’s response to viral hepatitis from 2025 to 2030.

Both Strategies set ambitious goals, including:

  • virtually eliminating transmission of hepatitis B and hepatitis C by 2030
  • reducing illness and deaths associated with viral hepatitis
  • eliminating the negative impact of stigma, discrimination, and legal and human rights issues on people’s health
  • minimising the personal and social impacts of viral hepatitis.

The Strategies also identify an equity threshold, priority populations and settings, and Key Areas for Action to guide the national response.

Developing the Implementation Action Plans

Each National Strategy will have its own Implementation Action Plan. The plans will prioritise and sequence the actions needed to deliver on the Strategies’ goals and targets across 2025–2030.

Hepatitis Australia is working with people and organisations with expertise across the hepatitis sector to ensure the plans are informed by a broad range of perspectives and experience.

Advisory groups

Three advisory groups have been convened to provide input into the development of the Implementation Action Plans:

Expert Project Advisory Group
Representatives with expertise across community, clinical, research and government sectors.

Key Population Steering Group
National peak organisations representing lived experience and key populations identified in the National Strategies.

Hepatitis Australia Research and Clinical Advisory Group
Hepatitis Australia’s advisory group providing research and clinical expertise to inform our work.

Prioritising action

Hepatitis Australia is currently developing draft Implementation Action Plans for both National Strategies.

The plans are being informed by a prioritisation survey and sequencing workshops, which will help identify the actions that are most important to progress and how they should be sequenced across the four-year Strategy period.

The draft plans will then be reviewed by the Expert Project Advisory Group and Key Population Steering Group before being submitted to the Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections Standing Committee (BBVSS) for endorsement.
