World Hepatitis Day 2015 (WHD)
July 28th is recognised across the globe as World Hepatitis Day (WHD).
World Hepatitis Day is one of only eight designated health days endorsed by the World Health Organization as mandated by the World Health Assembly. Over 400 million people worldwide are living with hepatitis B or C. Every year, 1.4 million people die from viral hepatitis. With better awareness, understanding and management many of these deaths can be prevented.

'It’s Time For Action On Viral Hepatitis. Time For Action – Test, Check, Treat'
'It’s time for action on viral hepatitis' is the theme for World Hepatitis Day 2015 in Australia. It is estimated that there are almost half a million Australians living with hepatitis B or C. Close to 1,000 Australians die each year due to viral hepatitis; urgent action is required to prevent these deaths. Ensuring all Australians with chronic hepatitis B and C are diagnosed, undergo regular liver check-ups and receive appropriate treatment is critical to avert a liver disease crisis in Australia.
World Hepatitis Day in Australia is coordinated by Hepatitis Australia and conducted under the umbrella of the Love your Liver campaign. It is rolled out locally by the eight state and territory hepatitis organisations.
What is happening in Australia for WHD?
Hepatitis Australia, in conjunction with its member organisations, will be conducting the following activities to raise awareness of viral hepatitis and influence positive change for all people affected by viral hepatitis.
A community survey has been conducted to develop a profile of people’s lived experience of viral hepatitis. The survey results will be used in a World Hepatitis Day media release that draws attention to the issues faced by people affected by viral hepatitis and the actions required to address them.
Through local events and meetings, the actions needed to address the issues highlighted in the community survey will be brought to the attention of policy makers and parliamentarians. Hepatitis Australia and their member organisations will seek assistance of policy makers and parliamentarians to take action and address these issues.

World Hepatitis Day is important. We want to utilise social media to let as many people as possible know that 28 July is World Hepatitis Day and that viral hepatitis is an important issue.
Currently in development is a 30-second animation video highlighting that action is required to address viral hepatitis in Australia. We will be encouraging everyone to share this video on social media.
How can you help support World Hepatitis Day
To make World Hepatitis Day as successful as possible, we rely on support from our stakeholders, community organisations and the public. Each year, workplaces, individuals, schools and communities across Australia host or participate in World Hepatitis Day events and activities.
