Modelling study estimating and comparing the costs and benefits of introducing a prison needle and syringe program in all Australian prisons.
The objective of this study is to estimate and compare the costs and benefits of introducing a prison needle and syringe program in all Australian prisons.
Projected new hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections and hospitalisations with injection-related bacterial and fungal infections in prisons, with and without the needle and syringe program; costs of the program; savings in treatment costs for HCV and injection-related bacterial and fungal infections; benefit-cost ratio of the program.
The study will look at how many new hepatitis C infections and injection-related bacterial or fungal infections are expected to happen in prisons, both with and without a needle and syringe program. It will also look at how much the program would cost, how much money could be saved in treatment costs, and whether the program provides good value for money overall.
