Consensus Statement addressing Hepatitis C in Australian Custodial Settings
Hepatitis Australia’s mission is to ensure effective action on hepatitis B and hepatitis C to meet the needs of all Australians. In keeping with this mission, we have developed the Consensus Statement: Addressing Hepatitis C in Australian Custodial Settings which has been endorsed by over twenty leading organisations in this field.
The Third National Hepatitis C Strategy in 2010, which was endorsed by all Australian Health Ministers, listed people in custodial settings as a priority population. This strategy recommends the monitoring of the implementation of the Hepatitis C Prevention, Treatment and Care: Guidelines for Australian Custodial Settings as a priority action.
Despite agreement on this action, little progress has been made on the ground; there is therefore urgent need for a greatly improved response. We encourage you to read the following Consensus Statement to increase your awareness of the need for all Australians, including those in a custodial setting, to have access to the same level of prevention and care.

2007 Poll Results
Perceptions of hepatitis C poll
The Perceptions of hepatitis C poll was funded by Schering-Plough and conducted through an independent research company to investigate community understanding of hepatitis C transmission, prevalence and treatment. The poll was conducted with a random sample of 1,100 people across Australia, weighted according to ABS statistics.
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Communities
Mapping & Scoping of hepatitis C education and prevention activities
Hepatitis Australia was funded in 2006 to employ a National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Policy and Projects Officer. This led to the development of a project to map and scope hepatitis C education and prevention activities targeting Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities nationally. The mapping and scoping project was designed to identify current gaps in services and explore the challenges faced by government and non-government health care providers when developing services within Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities.
